art at the heart is the sixth biennial Regional Arts Australia national conference and will be held from 3 -5 October 2008 in Alice Springs with an outdoor opening ceremony at sunset on Thursday 2 October.
The Northern Territory Government is hosting the conference through Arts NT in collaboration with the Alice Springs Town Council. The Australian Government supports Regional Arts Australia’s national conferences through the Regional Arts Fund. The Australia Council for the Arts supports the artistic program for the conference. The Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs is supporting Indigenous participation in the conference. Early bird rates extended until 1 August: To assist as much as we can, we have extended the early bird registration rate to Friday 1 August 2008.
Session preference nomination: Delegates can now nominate the sessions they would like to attend directly online. Already registered delegates will be contacted by IAM EVENTS to choose their preferences. Please note that some sessions have limited numbers and preferences will be offered in order of the date that they are received. 2010 Regional Arts Australia conference announced: The seventh Regional Arts Australia national conference will be held in Launceston and will take place from 27 to 29 August 2010. Tasmanian Regional Arts is looking forward to hosting this significant biennial arts event which will showcasing the depth of artistic practise in Australia’s only island state. Tasmania's Minister for Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts, Michelle O’Byrne announced the conference dates in a ceremony in Launceston and congratulated Regional Arts Australia for bringing the conference to Tasmania.

An interview with Peter Jenkinson OBE (UK)
Peter Jenkinson's keynote address will focus on arts partnerships, collaborations and exchanges. Peter is passionately advocating and acting for deep and lasting change across the cultural and political landscape and has worked in the cultural sector for over 20 years. The following is an excpert of his discussions with conference coordinator and artistic director Kieren Sanderson.
Peter can you tell us about the Creative Partnerships programme that you worked on from 2001 - 2004?
Creative Partnerships is much more than two clichés in one title!
It is the first nationally-coordinated, government-sponsored, long-term creative learning program in the world linking schools with the best of the creative and cultural sector in order to engender sustainable and positive change for young people, teachers and the broader school community as well as the creative and cultural sector itself.
What do you think is the key to negotiating successful relationships across different sectors like the arts and education, health, justice, heritage, private enterprise, not for profit organisations and the wider community?
...one of the statements I most often make is to “make friends with strange people”, as I passionately believe that in doing so, truly new and unexpected value is created. We should all have conversations with people who we initially think have nothing in common or nothing to offer and then witness the surprising and positive results.
In all good relationships the partners work to their own strengths whilst hoping to tease the very best out of their partners. Only the very best...excellence...is good enough. This is what I consider the key to successful relationships.
Do you think that partnerships, collaborations and exchanges encourage arts development in the community?
Some have suggested that mass collaboration will become the dominant form of working and of production, including creative production, in this fast-moving century driven not least by the ever greater sophistication, availability and affordability of technology and especially social networking tools. In his latest book We-think. The power of mass collaboration(www.wethinkthebook.net www.charlesleadbeater.net), Charlie Leadbeater entertainingly and persuasively speculates on the abandonment of top down controls and the flourishing of new forms of exchange, creation and distribution from the bottom up which at its core implies new forms of democracy and power relations. I think this is truly exciting – a Wisdom of Crowds agenda perhaps - but am still struggling to get my head around what the future might look like!
Can you tell us what projects you are currently working on and how they are leading the way?
One of the most interesting is acting for the last two years as an Expert Advisor on the post-conflict art programme in the City of Derry in Northern Ireland including a major art commission The Foyle Public Art Commission (www.foylepublicart.com)
I'm very much looking forward to being in Alice Springs and the opportunity to be part of rich and rewarding conversations at art at the heart.

The super-inter-regional postcard art swap lucky dip exhibition spectacular: deLiver is still open until 16 August. deLiver is the creation of Alice Springs writer Jennifer Mills and artist and musician Beth Sometimes and encourages anyone living in regional Australia to create a postcard and send to Alice.
